SIM cards and internet in Uzbekistan

How to get a local connection, set it up before leaving the shop and keep maps, tickets and contacts available when coverage disappears.

A local data connection makes train changes, maps, translation and ride-hailing easier. Tourist SIM packages and operator offers change frequently, so the right choice is based on current coverage and service—not an old blog's cheapest-price claim.

Quick answer

Buy from an official operator shop or authorised airport counter, bring your passport, confirm the package and expiry, and test data plus calls before leaving. Download critical information offline regardless.

Where to buy a tourist SIM

International airports may have operator counters with longer hours, making them convenient after arrival. A city operator shop can offer more time and plan choice. Avoid an unmarked reseller that cannot explain registration, included data or how to obtain help.

Have the staff show the operator name, active phone number, data allowance, validity, domestic call allowance and any renewal method. Keep the SIM holder or receipt until the connection works.

Passport registration and device questions

Local SIM activation normally requires identification. Use the same legal name and passport details used for entry. Uzbekistan also has device-identification rules for phones used on local networks over longer periods; short-stay visitors should ask the operator whether any device action applies to the length of their stay rather than relying on outdated online explanations.

Set everything up at the counter

  • Confirm your phone is unlocked before travel.
  • Insert or activate the SIM while staff are present.
  • Turn off roaming on the home SIM to avoid surprise charges.
  • Load a webpage without shop Wi-Fi.
  • Make a test call or receive a text.
  • Save the local number and operator support method.
  • Ask how to check remaining data and validity.

Dual-SIM users should choose which line handles mobile data, calls and bank verification texts. Do not remove access to a home number that receives essential authentication.

Will an eSIM work?

Travel eSIM availability changes and may offer data without a local phone number. It can be useful if installed before departure, but check whether it permits tethering, which local network it uses and when validity begins. A data-only eSIM may not satisfy apps that expect local SMS verification.

Coverage outside the major cities

Connections are generally easiest in Tashkent and the main tourist cities. On desert roads, mountain routes and remote stays, speeds can fall or service can vanish. Different operators can perform differently by region, so ask which network works along your actual itinerary.

Download before you need it

  • Offline maps for each city and the road between them.
  • Train and flight tickets as PDFs or screenshots.
  • Hotel names, addresses and phone numbers in Latin script.
  • Translation language packs.
  • Passport, insurance and emergency-contact copies in protected storage.

Public Wi-Fi is convenient but not a place for sensitive banking unless you trust the network and use appropriate security. Keep software updated and use a screen lock.

If mobile data does not work

Restart the phone, verify the chosen data SIM and check whether mobile data is enabled. Ask the operator to confirm the access-point settings and account balance. If only one app fails, the problem may not be the network. Do not repeatedly change settings without recording the original values.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy an Uzbekistan SIM at Tashkent airport?

Operator availability and hours can change. If a staffed official counter is open, it is convenient; otherwise use an official city branch.

Do I need my passport?

Plan to present it for a properly registered local SIM.

How much data do I need?

Maps and messaging use relatively little; video and tethering use much more. Choose a current package based on trip length and ask how to add data.

Is hotel Wi-Fi enough?

It may be enough for a low-connectivity trip, but a local connection is valuable for ride-hailing, delays and communication away from the hotel.
