Fergana Valley
Uzbekistan's craft heartland — ceramics, silk, and authentic everyday life.
The Heart of Uzbekistan's Living Traditions
While Uzbekistan's famous Silk Road cities are known for their magnificent architecture and rich history, the Fergana Valley offers something different. This is where traditions are not preserved behind museum walls — they are part of everyday life.
Nestled between mountain ranges in the country's east, the valley is one of the most fertile and vibrant regions of Uzbekistan. Green orchards, cotton fields, vineyards, and bustling towns create a landscape that has supported communities for centuries. It is also home to some of the country's most skilled artisans, whose craftsmanship has been passed down through generations.
The city of Margilan is renowned for its handmade silk. Visitors can watch the entire production process, from silkworm cocoons to beautifully woven ikat fabrics, using techniques that have changed little since the days of the Silk Road. A short drive away lies Rishtan, famous throughout Central Asia for its distinctive blue ceramics. Local potters continue to create each piece by hand, using natural glazes and traditional firing methods that make every work unique.
Beyond its workshops and markets, the Fergana Valley offers a glimpse into everyday Uzbek life. Family-run bakeries, colourful bazaars, peaceful villages, and warm hospitality make this region one of the most authentic places to visit in the country. It is where travellers can meet local artisans, share a traditional meal, and experience customs that remain an important part of daily life.
At Mosaïque Journeys, we believe the Fergana Valley is best explored slowly. Spend time with the people who keep these traditions alive, discover the stories behind every handcrafted piece, and experience a side of Uzbekistan that feels genuine, welcoming, and deeply connected to its cultural heritage.
The Fergana Valley is defined not by grand monuments, but by the people who continue to shape its identity.
