Shahrisabz
The green birthplace of Amir Timur, and the ruins of his most ambitious palace.
The Birthplace of a Legend
Just a short journey south of Samarkand, nestled at the foot of the Zarafshan Mountains, lies Shahrisabz — a city whose history is forever linked to one of the greatest figures of Central Asia, Amir Timur (Tamerlane). Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shahrisabz offers visitors a deeper understanding of the ruler who transformed Samarkand into the magnificent capital of his empire.
It was here that Timur was born in 1336, and although he chose Samarkand as his imperial seat, he never forgot his hometown. Determined to honour his birthplace, he commissioned grand palaces, mosques, and gardens that reflected the power and ambition of his reign. Today, visitors can still admire the monumental remains of the Ak-Saray Palace, once one of the most impressive royal residences in the Islamic world. Its towering entrance portal, decorated with intricate blue mosaics, hints at the extraordinary scale and elegance of the palace that once stood here.
Beyond its historic monuments, Shahrisabz offers a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere than Uzbekistan's larger cities. Tree-lined streets, local markets, traditional neighbourhoods, and welcoming cafés invite visitors to slow down and experience everyday life away from the busiest tourist routes.
The journey to Shahrisabz is just as memorable as the destination itself. The road winds through the scenic mountain landscapes of southern Uzbekistan, offering panoramic views, small villages, and opportunities to experience another side of the country's natural beauty.
At Mosaïque Journeys, we see Shahrisabz as more than a historical stop. It is a place that completes the story of Uzbekistan — where travellers can connect the remarkable legacy of Amir Timur with the landscapes and community that shaped his early years.
Whether visited as a day trip from Samarkand or as part of a wider journey, Shahrisabz is one of the country's most fascinating hidden gems.
