Uzbekistan packing list

Bring the documents and layers that prevent real problems; leave room for craft, textiles and memories that cannot be downloaded.

Uzbekistan does not require specialist expedition gear on a classic city route. The essential differences are strong seasonal temperatures, religious-site etiquette, long transport legs and the need to keep immigration and accommodation documents organised.

The five essentials

Correct passport/visa documents, travel insurance, two payment methods, broken-in walking shoes and breathable layers plus one modest outfit. Keep tickets and hotel details offline.

Before packing medicine, drones or specialist equipmentCheck current customs, aviation and entry rules. An everyday item at home can require documentation or permission in another country.

Documents and copies

  • Passport with validity meeting your current entry rule.
  • Visa or e-visa copy if your passport requires one.
  • Travel insurance details and emergency number.
  • Flight, train and accommodation confirmations.
  • Accommodation registration records as received.
  • Prescription or doctor letter for relevant medication.
  • Secure digital copies plus selected paper backups.

Use the official-source checks in our visa guide and keep hotel registration organised using our registration guide.

Money and security

Pack two usable payment cards separately, modest emergency foreign cash in good condition and a small daily wallet. Store issuer numbers offline. A money belt is optional; discreet separation and ordinary awareness matter more than elaborate equipment. Do not pack all access to money in the same bag.

Clothing by season

Summer: loose breathable tops and trousers, sun hat, sunglasses and a light overshirt. Spring/autumn: layers, light jacket and compact rain shell. Winter: insulated coat, thermals, gloves, hat and weather-resistant shoes. Every season needs one shoulder- and knee-covering outfit plus a scarf for active religious sites.

Shoes and luggage

Bring broken-in walking shoes with grip for stone, dust and uneven paving. A second light pair helps if the first becomes wet. Wheeled luggage works on the main route but may be awkward in old-city lanes and stair-only guesthouses; pack a manageable size and confirm porter or lift access when mobility matters.

Health and personal items

  • Regular medication in original labelled packaging.
  • Clinician-recommended travel health kit.
  • Sunscreen, lip protection and insect repellent appropriate to the route.
  • Hand sanitiser and tissues.
  • Reusable bottle used only with water you trust.
  • Any essential menstrual, baby or specialist products you cannot easily substitute.

Ask a qualified travel-health professional about your personal needs and current destination guidance. Insurance should match planned activities and existing conditions.

Electronics

Bring a universal adapter compatible with Uzbekistan's current socket/voltage information, charging cables and a flight-compliant power bank. Download offline maps and translation packs. Store train PDFs and hotel contacts locally, not only in email. A spare charging cable is more useful than many travel gadgets.

Day bag for trains and road transfers

  • Passport and ticket.
  • Water and simple snacks.
  • Warm layer for air-conditioning.
  • Phone, cable and power bank.
  • Medication you may need that day.
  • Tissues and hand sanitiser.
  • Hotel name, address and transfer contact offline.

Desert or mountain additions

Add a warm night layer, closed shoes, sun coverage and a small torch. Ask the operator whether bedding, towels and drinking water are provided. Mountain conditions require route-specific advice; do not treat a cultural packing list as hiking equipment guidance.

What not to bring casually

Do not pack a drone without confirming permission and import/use rules. Check controlled medicines, professional filming equipment, satellite devices and culturally or legally sensitive material. Avoid irreplaceable jewellery and excess cash. Antiques and cultural objects may need export documentation; buy from reputable sellers and retain receipts.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to carry my passport?

Current official advice says visitors should be able to present identification. Protect the original and keep copies, but follow local instructions on when the original is required.

Can I travel with a carry-on only?

Yes for many city itineraries if seasonal layers fit and laundry is available. Check every airline's own baggage allowance.

Do I need a headscarf?

Women do not need one for ordinary public life, but a light scarf is useful where an active religious site requests coverage.

Should I bring toilet paper?

A small tissue pack is useful on transfers and at simpler facilities; no need to fill the suitcase.
