Uzbekistan has made tourism entry much easier for many nationalities, but there is no single rule for every passport. Your nationality, travel purpose, length of stay and number of entries all matter. The safest method is to identify your route through official sources before buying non-refundable transport.
Many travellers can enter Uzbekistan visa-free for a limited stay; others can apply through the official government e-visa portal. Check the current rule for your exact passport and never rely on an old country list or a commercial site that looks official.
First determine your entry route
Visa-free entry
Uzbekistan grants visa-free visits to citizens of many countries, but permitted duration and conditions can differ. Count the allowance from the moment you cross the border and make sure your departure falls safely inside it. If you will work, study, report professionally or remain longer, tourism entry may not be the correct category.
Electronic visa
Eligible passport holders can use Uzbekistan's official electronic visa system. Apply with time to correct a rejected photograph, payment problem or spelling error. Download the issued document and carry an offline copy; do not assume airport Wi-Fi will be available when it is requested.
Embassy or consular visa
If your passport is not covered by visa-free entry or e-visa eligibility—or your purpose is outside ordinary tourism—contact the Uzbekistan embassy or consulate responsible for your country of residence. An invitation or additional documentation may be required for some categories.
Use the correct official website
The recognised government e-visa address uses the e-visa.gov.uz domain. Search results can contain intermediaries charging service fees or using official-looking language. An agency can help with planning, but it should never disguise itself as the issuing authority.
- Check that the domain ends in gov.uz.
- Read the eligibility and document rules before starting.
- Keep your application number and payment confirmation.
- Return through the official portal to check status.
Prepare the application carefully
Your passport details must match exactly, including every given name and the machine-readable spelling. Use a recent compliant portrait and a clear passport scan. Confirm passport validity through the official rule applicable to your visa route; governments may describe validity from arrival differently from validity needed when a visa is issued.
Before submitting, check:
- passport number, issue date and expiry date;
- nationality and country of birth;
- arrival date and requested visa validity;
- single, double or multiple entry where offered;
- photograph proportions, file type and clarity;
- an email address you can access while travelling.
Common e-visa problems
The photograph or scan will not upload
Resize to the portal's stated dimensions and file limit without stretching the image. Remove shadows around the passport, keep all edges visible and avoid screenshots with interface elements.
Payment fails
International card authentication can fail for reasons outside the portal. Try a different eligible card, confirm online and overseas payments with the issuer, and avoid submitting multiple applications unless the first genuinely failed.
No confirmation appears
Check spam folders and use the official status function with your application details. Do not create a conflicting application simply because an email is slow.
A detail is wrong after approval
Do not edit the PDF. Contact the issuing authority or relevant consulate; even a small passport mismatch can matter at check-in or immigration.
What to carry on arrival
- The passport used for the application.
- A printed and offline copy of the e-visa, if required.
- First-night accommodation details.
- Onward or return transport information.
- Travel insurance and emergency contacts.
Check that immigration has recorded your entry correctly. Accommodation registration is a separate obligation from the visa itself; see our Uzbekistan tourist registration guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do UK, EU, Australian or Canadian tourists need a visa?
Many such passport holders currently benefit from limited visa-free stays, but rules can change and are passport-specific. Check the current MFA list and your government's advisory instead of treating this sentence as approval to travel.
How early should I apply for an Uzbekistan e-visa?
Apply well before the minimum processing period so there is time to resolve photograph, payment or data issues. Avoid leaving it until the final days before departure.
Can I show the e-visa on my phone?
Keep a digital copy, but carry a printed copy too. A flat battery or connectivity problem should not become an immigration problem.
Does a visa include tourist registration?
No. Entry permission and accommodation registration are separate. Hotels normally handle registration; private stays require more attention.
